About Ideal Weight
"Ideal weight" formulas provide rough reference ranges based on height and sex. They were developed for clinical dosing and screening, not as fitness targets. Individual body composition, muscle mass, and frame size can make your actual healthy weight different from these estimates.
Formulas used
- Robinson (1983): Male: 52 + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 ft. Female: 49 + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 ft.
- Miller (1983): Male: 56.2 + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 ft. Female: 53.1 + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 ft.
- Devine (1974): Male: 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft. Female: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft.
- Hamwi (1964): Male: 48 + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 ft. Female: 45.5 + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 ft.
A healthy BMI range (18.5–25) is also shown as an additional reference.
Limitations
- All formulas were designed for adults 5 feet (152 cm) or taller.
- They do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body frame.
- Use them as one of several inputs, not as a single health target.
